Olde English Bulldogges - History

The history of Olde English Bulldogges is well documented and the goals of the breed creation worth keeping in mind. The Olde English Bulldogge is a new breed. Its creator, David Leavitt, attempted to breed a dog that is close to the English Bulldog of the 18th century, yet has none of its cruelty. The modern English Bulldog is far from its ancestors and appears to have a great number of health disorders, which makes the dog practically incapable of living without a human assistance.

Thus, in 1971, David Leavitt started the breeding program that turned out to be a success. He based the breeding program on the line-breeding scheme. The new breed was a cross between the English Bulldog, Bullmastiff, Pit Bull, and American Bulldog.

Nowadays, the dogs are being bred to the sole standard. This is one of the objectives of the Olde English Bulldogge Association. This organization serves the interests of the breed and educates breeders and owners of the characteristics of the Olde English Bulldogge. All litters of Olde English Bulldogges have to be registered with this organization.
